How licensed customs brokerage works, what clearance involves, and how Kesco’s services fit together.
A customs broker is a licensed professional authorized by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to prepare and file import entries, ISF filings, and related documentation on behalf of importers. Licensed brokers must pass a CBP licensing examination and are regulated by federal law. They act as the intermediary between the importer and CBP, ensuring goods are classified correctly, duties are calculated accurately, and all regulatory requirements are met for entry into the United States.
Clearance begins before cargo arrives with ISF submission, required 24 hours before vessel loading. Upon arrival, the broker files an entry with CBP including the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and any required permits. CBP reviews the entry and either releases the goods, requests additional documentation, or selects the shipment for examination. Once released, the broker provides release documentation to the drayage team for pickup.
A freight forwarder arranges the transportation of goods. A customs broker handles the regulatory side, filing entries with CBP and managing duty payments and compliance. Kesco holds both licenses, handling freight forwarding and customs clearance under one team with no handoffs between providers.
